The African Democratic Congress has sharply rejected claims that Senator David Mark has stepped down as National Chairman, describing the reports as deliberate falsehoods meant to sow confusion.
In a strongly worded statement from the Media Office of the National Chairman, the party labelled the rumours an “insidious fabrication” pushed by “puerile, weak and inconsiderate propagandists.” NaijaChoice News obtained the statement late on Sunday evening.
The ADC insisted Senator Mark remains the substantive National Chairman with full support of the leadership. There has been no discussion or plan for his resignation, the party said.
“The assertion that Senator David Mark has stepped down exists only in the warped imagination of those bent on spreading falsehood and creating confusion within our party,” the statement read.
Party leaders stressed that the ADC remains united and focused on strengthening democratic values and offering credible alternatives to Nigerians. They pointed to the growing influence of the party and the political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections as the real reason behind attempts to destabilise it.
Senator David Mark, a former Senate President and one of Nigeria’s most experienced politicians, joined the ADC in 2025 after decades in the Peoples Democratic Party. His emergence as chairman was seen as a move to reposition the party as a viable opposition force.
The statement warned that any plot to undermine multi-party democracy or push Nigeria towards a one-party system would be resisted by the ADC and majority of Nigerians. It urged citizens to ignore the rumours and trust the party’s stability.
Political observers note that the denial comes amid an ongoing leadership dispute within the ADC, including recent actions by the Independent National Electoral Commission. The party, however, maintained its resolve to remain a strong platform for democratic contest in 2027.
The ADC called on all members and supporters to stay focused on the task ahead, describing the current phase as critical for Nigeria’s political future.
