Lagos-born Isaac Odugbesan, who wrestles as Oba Femi, has become one of Nigeria’s biggest exports to global sports entertainment. The 27-year-old former shot put champion now commands attention on WWE’s main roster after dominating NXT as a two-time champion. His story blends raw Nigerian athletic grit with American opportunity and a deep pride in his roots.
Oba Femi grew up in Lagos, where he first honed his power on the track and field circuit. During his schooling at Proper Arsenal College and later as a freshman at the University of Lagos, he competed fiercely in shot put. He picked up multiple medals at Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) events, proving himself among the country’s top student-athletes before earning scholarships abroad.
In the United States, Odugbesan continued to excel. He started at Middle Tennessee State University before transferring to the University of Alabama. There, he claimed three Southeastern Conference (SEC) titles in shot put—indoor in 2021 and 2022, and outdoor in 2022. Standing 6’6” and weighing around 310 pounds, his throwing background built the explosive strength that now defines his wrestling style.
WWE spotted his potential in 2021 through its Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) programme. He signed without prior wrestling experience, trained at the Performance Center, and made his NXT television debut in 2022. NaijaChoice News notes that Oba Femi quickly rose through the ranks, winning the 2023 NXT Men’s Breakout Tournament, the NXT North American Championship (with a record 273-day reign as the youngest holder), and the 2024 Iron Survivor Challenge.
By January 2025, he captured the NXT Championship in a triple-threat match, becoming the first NIL graduate to claim the brand’s top title. He defended it successfully before vacating the belt in early 2026 to join the main roster. Since his Royal Rumble debut, the powerhouse has appeared as a free agent on both Raw and SmackDown, already facing top stars and drawing comparisons to legends.
Throughout his climb, Oba Femi has proudly waved the Nigerian flag. He credits his Lagos upbringing and early wrestling fandom for fuelling his drive. NUGA officials have repeatedly celebrated him as an inspiration for student-athletes back home, showing that discipline on the local field can lead to global stages.
As Oba Femi settles into WWE’s main roster, his journey remains a powerful reminder for young Nigerians chasing dreams in sport. From university games in Jos and Lagos to packed arenas in America, the former shot putter turned “The Ruler” continues to prove that talent from home can conquer the world.
