The Federal Government has declared Friday, April 3, and Monday, April 6, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Easter celebration.

Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo made the announcement on behalf of the government in a statement issued on Wednesday. He congratulated Christians in Nigeria and the diaspora on the joyous occasion, noting that Easter Sunday falls on April 5.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of selflessness, forgiveness, forbearance and love as shown in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. He also called for continued commitment to tolerance and community spirit that bind the nation together.

The minister stressed that the government’s focus remains on policies that promote national rebirth, economic growth and shared prosperity for all citizens.

NaijaChoice News reports that the declaration aligns with long-standing tradition in Nigeria, where Easter is one of the most significant Christian festivals observed with church services, family gatherings and deep spiritual reflection across the country. The two public holidays, combined with the weekend, will give many workers and families extended time to participate fully in the celebrations.
