Former Kano Deputy Governor and 2023 All Progressives Congress governorship candidate perfected a defection deal with Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State. He is expected to formally join the African Democratic Congress on Tuesday. The development comes amid fresh political realignments in Kano ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a resignation letter dated March 27, 2026, Gawuna said the decision takes immediate effect. He aligned it with President Bola Tinubu’s directive for all political appointees to step down in compliance with the Electoral Act.

The letter expressed deep gratitude to President Tinubu for the chance to serve. Gawuna described his time at the helm of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria as a privilege that allowed him to contribute to the institution’s growth and the country’s housing finance sector.

“My resignation is in strict compliance with the President’s directive requiring all political appointees to step down in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act,” the letter read.

Born in 1967 in Kano, Gawuna served as Deputy Governor under Abdullahi Ganduje from 2018 to 2023 before his appointment to lead the FMBN board in May 2025. He placed his political future “in the hands of Allah (SWT)” and asked for divine guidance on his next move.

Gawuna assured stakeholders of a smooth handover. He pledged to transfer all responsibilities according to established procedures and directives from the relevant authorities.
