President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to open a special account for a new welfare fund supporting Nigeria’s Armed Forces.
The President announced the initiative on Sunday while marking his 74th birthday, describing it as a personal tribute to soldiers, sailors and airmen who risk everything for the nation’s peace.
In a statement issued from the State House, Tinubu said all salaries he has earned since assuming office will go into the fund as seed money. He stressed that this contribution stands separate from existing insurance and welfare packages already available to service personnel.
The fund will cater directly to troops wounded in action, especially those who have lost limbs, as well as the widows, widowers and children left behind by officers and ranks who paid the supreme price.
NaijaChoice News reports that the President called on state governors, members of the National Assembly, the private sector and well-meaning Nigerians to rally behind the initiative once account details are released.
Tinubu described the move as more than charity. “This is not charity. It is duty,” he declared, adding that the country must never forget those who stand in harm’s way or the heavy burden carried by their families.
The announcement comes against the backdrop of sustained military operations across the Northeast, Northwest and other flashpoints where troops continue to confront insurgency, banditry and other security threats. Many families have borne the pain of loss while the nation grapples with these challenges.
The President, who also serves as Commander-in-Chief, said the fund will honour the valiant men and women of the Armed Forces and ensure their sacrifices are matched by concrete support from the highest levels of government and society.
Details of the dedicated account, he added, will be made public in due course to allow contributions to flow in smoothly.
