A 37-year-old nurse, Kehinde Adesanya, has been remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, over the alleged unlawful abortion that led to the death of a 23-year-old NYSC corps member.
NaijaChoice News reports that Adesanya was arraigned on Thursday, March 26, 2026, before Magistrate O.O. Sam-Obaleye at the Isabo Magistrate Court on four counts, including conspiracy to commit felony, supplying drugs for unlawful abortion, conspiracy to commit murder, and murder.
Police counsel Solomon Babalola told the court that the offences took place between January and March 2026 at Ikereku area, Laderin, Abeokuta. He said the drugs allegedly supplied by Adesanya caused the death of Victoria Ariyo Olapeju.
The prosecutor urged the court to remand the nurse for 60 days in the first instance pending legal advice from the Ogun State Director of Public Prosecutions. He argued that the charges contravene Sections 516, 230, 324, and 319 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
The magistrate granted the application and ordered Adesanya’s remand at the Ibara Correctional Centre. The case was adjourned to May 26, 2026.
Ariyo died two weeks ago after undergoing the abortion procedure. According to police, the corps member had been in a romantic relationship with Abass Olalekan, the NYSC Inspector for Abeokuta South Local Government Area, which resulted in pregnancy.
Olalekan was arraigned on Monday before Magistrate A.K. Araba on two counts of conspiracy and attempt to procure abortion. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N500,000.
The development has once again highlighted the risks associated with illegal abortion practices in parts of the country, especially among young women in service.
