Egyptian superstar Mohamed Salah has confirmed he will leave Liverpool Football Club when the current 2025/26 Premier League season ends in June. The 33-year-old forward, who joined the Reds from Roma in 2017, made the announcement on Tuesday through an emotional video message on his social media platforms.
Liverpool also issued a statement agreeing to end the player’s contract one year early. Salah had signed a two-year extension in April 2025 that was meant to keep him at Anfield until 2027. Both parties described the decision as mutual after nine remarkable years together.
In his farewell message, Salah said: “Unfortunately the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.” He added that the club, the city and the fans had become a deep part of his life and that of his family.
The Egyptian King has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances for Liverpool, making him one of the club’s greatest modern goal scorers. He played a key role in winning the Premier League title, Champions League, FA Cup and other major honours during his time on Merseyside.
For many Nigerian football lovers who follow the English Premier League keenly, Salah’s departure marks the end of an era. His consistent brilliance, work rate and leadership have inspired millions across Africa, especially in Egypt and beyond. Supporters here have always celebrated his big moments — from crucial goals to his humble off-pitch conduct.
Liverpool fans are already preparing emotional tributes as the season winds down. The club described Salah’s nine years as “illustrious” and thanked him for everything he contributed on and off the pitch.
No destination has been confirmed yet for the forward. Speculation continues to link him with big-money moves to the Saudi Pro League, where several clubs can meet his wage demands, or possibly Major League Soccer. The 2026 World Cup with Egypt also remains a major motivation for the veteran attacker.
Liverpool will now focus on planning for life after Salah. The summer transfer window promises to be busy as the Premier League champions look to strengthen their attack.
