Russia has dispatched 13 tons of humanitarian aid to Iran through Azerbaijan, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry announced on Thursday.
The consignment consists entirely of medicines and was delivered to Azerbaijani officials for onward transfer to Iranian authorities. The operation was carried out on the direct orders of President Vladimir Putin, the ministry stated.
In its official release, the ministry explained that its aviation unit handled the logistics to ensure the supplies reach authorised Iranian government representatives.
NaijaChoice News reports that the move comes at a time of severe regional instability. Large-scale attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran on February 28 left more than 1,300 people dead, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Iran retaliated with drone and missile strikes directed at Israel and several Gulf countries hosting American military bases.
The development underscores Russia’s continued support for Iran amid the ongoing crisis. Both nations have maintained close strategic ties for years, especially in the face of Western sanctions and pressure.
For Nigeria, the situation carries direct economic weight. As an OPEC member heavily reliant on crude oil exports, any prolonged instability in the Middle East often triggers swings in global oil prices that hit foreign reserves and the naira.
Analysts monitoring the conflict say Nigerian policymakers are watching closely, mindful of how such tensions could affect domestic fuel costs and overall economic stability.
