Lafia, Nasarawa – Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has decided to contest the Nasarawa North senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
NaijaChoice News reports that the governor, now in his second and final term, has accepted what his aides describe as a strong call from party loyalists and supporters. This move comes barely two years after he publicly ruled out any return to elective office once his governorship ends.
Sule made the firm declaration during a January 2024 appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme. “I came in only to be a governor. I have no intention to run for the office of a senator. You can keep this tape and play it one day,” he had told viewers at the time, addressing his PDP rival David Ombugadu.
The shift surfaced through a Facebook post by his Special Assistant on Social Media, Ango Ngharni Emmanuel. The governor’s aide said Sule has now “accepted the clarion call to contest” following heavy pressure from stakeholders within the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Sources close to the government told NaijaChoice News that the push is coming mainly from loyalists, political appointees and beneficiaries of Sule’s administration. They want him to step into the National Assembly and continue representing the zone after the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki in December 2025.
Born on December 26, 1959, Sule first won the governorship in 2019. He succeeded former Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, widely remembered as the Architect of Modern Nasarawa for laying the foundation of the state’s current political and infrastructural growth.
Political watchers in Nasarawa say the governor’s decision could reshape the 2027 equation in the northern senatorial district. It also adds fresh twist to ongoing talks about zoning and succession ahead of the polls.
As of now, no official statement has come directly from Government House, Lafia. But the Facebook disclosure by the governor’s media aide has already sparked wide reactions across the state’s political circles.
Stakeholders expect clearer signals from Sule in the coming months as party primaries draw closer. For now, the two-term governor appears ready to trade the Government House for the Senate chamber.
