New Nigeria-UK Migration Deal Revives Speculation Over Ike Ekweremadu Repatriation

A fresh bilateral agreement between Nigeria and the United Kingdom could open the door for the return of convicted Nigerians, including former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, currently serving time in a British prison.

The pact, signed during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to London this week, targets failed asylum seekers, visa overstayers and foreign national offenders with no legal right to remain in the UK.

NaijaChoice News gathered that the deal was formalised by Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood. It removes a long-standing bottleneck by allowing Britain to use “UK letters” – alternative identity documents – instead of waiting for Nigerian emergency travel papers.

Officials say the arrangement could fast-track the return of nearly 2,071 Nigerians, including over 960 who have exhausted asylum appeals and more than 1,100 convicted offenders awaiting deportation. Annual returns to Nigeria have already almost doubled to 1,150 under existing efforts.

Ekweremadu was convicted at the Old Bailey in March 2023 and handed a nine-year, eight-month sentence for organ trafficking. The case stemmed from plans to bring a 21-year-old Lagos street vendor, David Nwamini, to the UK for a kidney transplant to save his daughter.

His wife, Beatrice Ekweremadu, received four years and six months and completed her term, returning to Nigeria in January 2025. A co-convicted doctor, Obinna Obeta, got 10 years under modern slavery laws.

The Federal Government had pushed for Ekweremadu’s transfer last November through a high-level delegation led by Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi. British authorities rejected the request, citing fears Nigeria might not enforce the remaining sentence.

Tunji-Ojo, in a statement on X on Friday, described the new framework as one that guarantees “dignified return and reintegration.” He listed safeguards for vulnerable persons, including trafficking victims, plus cooperation on information sharing, training and border security.

Returnees will keep their rights under Nigerian law and can apply to re-enter the UK later if they meet immigration rules, he added.

A senior government source who spoke anonymously told NaijaChoice News that Ekweremadu’s return remains possible but is not currently on the table. “It may happen; I cannot overrule it. But at the moment, nothing of that nature is under active consideration,” the official said.

Another highly-placed source noted it would be beneficial for the former lawmaker, though he declined official comment.

Senior lawyer Bankole Akomolafe warned that any transfer must respect the UK court verdict. “A bilateral agreement cannot wipe out a valid sentence. If he comes home, the terms must be honoured unless a lawful pardon or review applies,” Akomolafe stressed.

The Alaigbo Development Foundation welcomed the possibility of repatriation. Its National President, Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie, said Ekweremadu had already paid a heavy price and Nigerian prisons are ill-equipped for such cases.

Awuzie instead called for a political or legal resolution, including a possible pardon, should he return.

Conversely, Tony Obizoba, former strategic director at Ohanaeze Ndigbo General Assembly Worldwide, urged Nigerians not to narrow the deal to one man. “Ekweremadu is just one individual. This agreement carries wider benefits for thousands of our people facing immigration hurdles abroad,” he said.

Obizoba added that the absence of a formal framework earlier doomed previous transfer attempts.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed no direct link exists between the migration pact and specific efforts to bring Ekweremadu home.

The pact also includes joint work against immigration crime, romance scams and fake sponsorships, signalling deeper bilateral trust.

As details on its start date remain undisclosed, many Nigerians in the UK and at home are watching closely to see how the deal plays out.
