Ogun Corper, Victoria Ariyo, Dies After Abortion; NYSC LGI Arrested

Police authorities in Ogun State have detained a senior National Youth Service Corps official in connection with the death of a female corps member in Abeokuta.

Abass Olalekan, the Local Government Inspector for Abeokuta South, is currently at the state command headquarters in Eleweran. Sources say he was in a personal relationship with the deceased, Victoria Ariyo, which allegedly led to the pregnancy that ended in complications.

Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, died on Tuesday after a terminated pregnancy went wrong. Her remains were buried the same day at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape-Sagamu Road.

NaijaChoice News learnt that Olalekan himself announced the death and mobilised other corps members to arrange the burial.

This incident comes barely a month after another female corps member, Adeleye Mary, died under mysterious circumstances in the same local government area. Mary, attached to Ogun State Television as her primary assignment, was found lifeless in her residence near her posting.

Although the two women were acquaintances, police sources insist the cases have no link.

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed it is treating Ariyo’s death as a serious matter. Spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi told journalists the case is now with the State Criminal Investigation Department.

Babaseyi, however, refused to comment on Olalekan’s arrest or any alleged involvement, saying investigations remain ongoing.

NYSC authorities in the state are yet to issue any official statement. The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Emmanuel Igba, said he was on leave and unaware of the incidents. Repeated attempts to reach the state coordinator, Mrs Olayinka Nasamu, also yielded no response.

Corps members and residents in Abeokuta have expressed concern over the safety of young graduates posted to serve in the state. The National Youth Service Corps scheme continues to face scrutiny whenever such tragedies occur.

Police say they are working to establish the full facts. Updates are expected as the probe advances.
