Abuja – The Obidient Movement is staring at fresh internal cracks after its Director of Finance, Dr Peter Agada, quit the group and launched a separate political outfit.
NaijaChoice News reports that Agada made the announcement at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, where he also unveiled The Movement Nigeria. The move signals possible realignment among supporters who once formed a solid bloc behind Labour Party’s Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential poll.
Agada blamed the decision on deep organisational gaps. He told journalists the group lacked proper structure and coordination, adding that key meetings and activities bypassed him despite his position.
“I resigned my position as Director of Finance about three days ago and sent a letter to the headquarters,” he said. “The lack of structure does not fit with my personality and the way I have grown as an architect of repute for the last 30 years.”
The Obidient Movement rose as a powerful youth-driven force during the 2023 elections. It drew strength from the #EndSARS protests and public anger against the political class, but questions about its long-term organisation have refused to fade.
Agada insisted the exit was not personal or driven by grudges. He stressed that The Movement Nigeria would not be tied to any individual, whether Obi, President Bola Tinubu or Atiku Abubakar.
“This movement is not built on any personality. It is not for Asiwaju, Obi or Atiku,” he declared. On funding, he said the new group would run on collective contributions from members, rejecting claims of sponsorship by any single “big man”.
Reacting to the development, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr Yunusa Tanko, expressed disappointment but played down the impact. He said the group was already pushing for a collegiate structure instead of the old directorate system.
Tanko told NaijaChoice News he had not seen any formal resignation letter and insisted the movement remained united. “We are still together. If he wants to run for the 2027 election, there is no problem. It is an election year, and many people will move from one platform to another.”
The resignation comes as political calculations for 2027 intensify. Analysts say it highlights growing restlessness within the post-2023 coalition and raises fresh doubts about the Obidient Movement’s ability to stay cohesive amid shifting alliances.
Dr Agada, who described his past role with Obi as strictly business-like, declined to say whether he would back the former Anambra governor or any other figure in the coming polls. The coming weeks are expected to show whether more key figures will follow his lead.
