No fewer than 18 persons have been confirmed killed in a violent gun battle between members of a local vigilante group and suspected repentant bandits in Falale and Kadobe villages, Daddara district of Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, around 1:30 pm when vigilantes on patrol engaged a group of the so-called repentant bandits, neutralising three of them in the initial exchange of fire.
Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mua’zu, who confirmed the casualty figure in an official statement, explained that the initial clash triggered a deadly reprisal by armed bandits on the affected communities.

“The incident resulted in the loss of 15 additional lives in the communities,” Mua’zu stated, bringing the total death toll to 18.
He added that security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Civilian Watch (C-Watch) and community leaders swiftly intervened, restoring order and stabilising the situation.
“The joint operation prevented further loss of life and restored peace to the affected villages,” the commissioner noted, while appealing to residents to remain calm and allow security agencies to complete their investigations.
Mua’zu acknowledged the pain of affected families and reaffirmed Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s commitment to lasting peace in the state.
“Gov. Dikko Radda’s administration remains focused on bringing lasting peace to Katsina State. Nothing will distract us from our commitment to secure lives and property,” he assured.
NaijaChoice News gathered that Jibia Local Government Area had enjoyed relative peace for over one year due to strategic security measures and non-kinetic approaches adopted by the state government, including amnesty programmes that encouraged bandits to surrender arms and reintegrate into society.
However, this latest bloodshed has once again exposed the fragility of such peace pacts, with critics long arguing that many bandits only feign repentance as a tactical move to evade justice and regroup for fresh attacks.
The development comes barely weeks after another major incident in the state where armed men killed at least 21 persons in Doma town, further raising fears that the controversial repentance deals may be emboldening criminals rather than curbing insecurity in the Northwest.
Security experts and residents have repeatedly warned that without genuine disarmament, proper monitoring and strict enforcement of agreements, such programmes risk becoming mere windows for bandits to buy time and strike back.
As investigations continue, NaijaChoice News calls on the Katsina State Government and relevant security agencies to intensify efforts towards sustainable solutions that prioritise the safety of lives and property in bandit-prone areas.
The people of Jibia and surrounding communities deserve more than temporary truces that collapse at the slightest provocation.
