Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has dismissed Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed as never an opposition figure but a “thief” like President Bola Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, just as fresh reports confirm the governor is set to formally defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) any moment from now.
Sowore dropped the bombshell outside the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday after his ongoing cyberbullying trial was adjourned to next month, reacting live to claims by a reporter that Mohammed remains “one of the last standing opposition governors.”
The activist, who has been consistent in his criticism of Nigeria’s political class since 2019, told the reporter point-blank: “I disagree with you. Bala Mohammed was never an opposition person. This is what I always tell you people, you will just be using all these adjectives to qualify criminals. That’s why I could never join… remember I was the first person to warn you against the ADC and the PDP that all of them are the same. It is just different appellations, there is no difference between ADC, APC and PDP.”

Sowore went further, reminding the reporter of Mohammed’s past as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, where allegations of massive corruption trailed his administration — the same court where his son, Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed, was once arraigned and prosecuted by the EFCC over alleged N1.2 billion fraud.
“How can you call Bala Mohammed who is a thief, like Tinubu, like Wike an opposition? Do you know Bala Mohammed used to be the Minister of the FCT, he did worse than Wike. He, alongside his son were arrested and prosecuted at this same Federal High Court and you are calling him an opposition? You are the ones who are wrong by calling these people opposition. How can thieves oppose thieves, it’s not possible,” Sowore thundered.
He insisted that the real opposition in Nigeria are not those with big cars, mansions in Abuja and deep pockets, but citizens fighting bare-handed without money or office.
“We are the real opposition but you don’t want us to call us opposition because we don’t have money, because we don’t drive big cars and because we don’t have mansions in Abuja, because you don’t know where to meet us… We are the ones confronting… because if we are not here this country will have been run over by Tinubu and APC, PDP and ADC. They are all the same, they are in the same WhatsApp group, they have the same DNA of oppression, of corruption, of disregard of the dignity of the Nigerian person.”
When the reporter pressed on whether Peter Obi qualifies as opposition, Sowore fired another salvo, accusing the former Anambra governor of packaging himself as a saint while aligning with the very forces he once criticised.
“Peter Obi is an opposition according to you but he opposes nothing and nobody according to us because we know him. If Peter Obi is an opposition, he will never have found himself in a Party where Malami is the main sponsor, in a Party where El-Rufai is a member, in a Party where the people he referred to some three years ago as ‘structure of criminality’… he was never an opposition.”
Sowore reminded listeners that he had warned since 2022 that Obi was fooling Nigerians and that it was time for those who fell for the hype to apologise to those who saw through the deception from the beginning.
“Peter Obi is a guy who came, packaged himself and lied to you and made all of you fall… It’s time for you to apologise to us who showed you that he is not different from his brothers and uncles. Ask yourself, where is his former Vice Presidential Candidate, they are all opposed to each other. Where is the political party that they said if you don’t join in 2022, you are an enemy of Nigeria? They are no longer in existence but where have we been since when we started in 2019, the same place. So, is it not time to start respecting us, with apologies, it is.”
NaijaChoice News reports that Sowore’s outburst comes as multiple credible sources confirm Governor Bala Mohammed has concluded arrangements to dump the PDP for the APC, with a formal defection ceremony expected imminently — a move that would leave the PDP with even fewer governors ahead of 2027.
The activist maintained that only the AAC and those fighting without “structure” or stolen wealth represent genuine opposition, urging Nigerians to stop glorifying politicians who simply switch parties while carrying the same DNA of corruption and oppression.
The Federal High Court matter involving Sowore’s alleged cyberstalking of President Tinubu was adjourned after heated exchanges in court, with the activist using the opportunity outside to deliver what many are calling his most direct takedown yet of Nigeria’s political elite.
