Stop The Scaremongering, We Are Not Sending Warships To Hormuz – France

France has fired back at circulating reports claiming it plans to deploy warships to the Strait of Hormuz, describing the claims as pure scaremongering.

The official response account of the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs made the position crystal clear in a strongly worded post: “No. The 🇫🇷 aircraft carrier strike group remains in the Eastern Mediterranean. France’s posture is unchanged: Defensive. Protective. Stop the scaremongering.”

This firm denial followed a direct appeal from United States President Donald Trump, who had urged several nations including France, China, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom to send naval forces to keep the strategic waterway open and safe. Trump’s call came after reports that Iran was attempting to disrupt shipping through the strait amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict.

NaijaChoice News reports that some international media outlets had earlier claimed France was ready to dispatch up to 10 warships in support of the American position. Those reports were quickly shot down by Paris.

French Defence Minister Catherine Vautrin had already signalled the same stance days earlier, stating categorically that “at this point, there is no question of sending any vessels to the Strait of Hormuz.”

The French carrier strike group, including the Charles de Gaulle, is staying put in the Eastern Mediterranean as part of what officials describe as a strictly defensive and protective mission.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil chokepoints, handling nearly 20 per cent of global seaborne oil trade. Any prolonged disruption could trigger sharp spikes in crude prices, with direct consequences for Nigeria’s oil revenue, fuel costs and overall economy.

As tensions in the Persian Gulf continue to simmer, NaijaChoice News reports that Paris has chosen to maintain its current deployment rather than join any new coalition operations in the area.

The United Kingdom, meanwhile, said it is still discussing options with allies but has not committed any carrier to the strait.

This latest development underscores growing divisions among Western allies over deeper involvement in the Iran crisis even as global energy markets watch nervously for any sign of escalation.
