The federal government has approved the establishment of a federal polytechnic in Abuja to be named after President Bola Tinubu.

Tunji Alausa, the minister of education, confirmed this in a letter addressed to Nyesom Wike, the FCT minister, on January 9 2025.

Alausa said establishing the institution is part of the ministry’s plan to ensure every state has a federal polytechnic.

The letter asked the FCT minister to suggest suitable locations in Gwarinpa for both the polytechnic’s temporary and permanent sites.

Alausa said a technical team from the ministry of education and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) is expected to inspect

He added that the government is open to taking over existing tertiary institutions in the FCT if they meet the requirements for the new polytechnic.

Earlier, the NBTE inaugurated a foundation to revitalise polytechnic education in Nigeria.

Idris Bugaje, the NBTE’s executive secretary, said there is a need to address some pressing challenges facing polytechnics.

He said plans are in motion to strengthen institutional capacity, promote industry collaboration, and facilitate international partnerships.

“Our polytechnic system must be the engine that drives Nigeria’s economic development and industrial growth,” the NBTE executive secretary said.
