President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu will enjoy full royal honours at Windsor Castle next week as the United Kingdom rolls out the red carpet for Nigeria’s first state visit in 37 years.

Thames Valley Police have confirmed sweeping airspace restrictions and a major policing operation across Windsor to guarantee safety during the high-profile event scheduled for March 18 and 19, 2026.

As previously reported by NaijaChoice News, King Charles III and Queen Camilla personally invited the Nigerian leader for the two-day visit, which Buckingham Palace described as the highest level of diplomatic engagement hosted by the monarch. The announcement in February marked the first time a Nigerian president will enjoy such a state welcome in Britain since 1989.

The castle already operates under a permanent airspace restriction, but police said the exclusion zone will be significantly extended on Wednesday, March 18, from 07:00 to 23:59 GMT. Officers warned that any breach of the no-fly rule will “likely” result in arrest.

A huge security deployment is already in motion. Search teams, armed response units, mounted officers, roads policing teams, neighborhood officers and specialist Project Servitor patrols will flood the historic town. Police will also activate Windsor’s extensive CCTV network and install hostile vehicle mitigation barriers to protect dignitaries, spectators and residents.

Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall of Thames Valley Police’s Joint Operations Unit said the force has drawn on its deep experience in royal events. “Significant planning and preparation has gone into this event. We will ensure everyone attending the state visit, including dignitaries, spectators and members of the public, are kept safe to enjoy the historic occasion.”

Road closures and parking bans begin from Tuesday, March 17, while some footways and pedestrian crossings in the town centre will shut temporarily between 09:30 and 12:30 on March 17 and 18 to allow for a ceremonial procession.

The visit comes at a time of deepening Nigeria-UK ties. King Charles has visited Nigeria four times — in 1990, 1999, 2006 and 2018 — and Nigerian stakeholders see the invitation as powerful recognition of the country’s growing global influence. Analysts expect high-level talks on trade and investment, climate action, counter-terrorism, migration, port infrastructure and cultural cooperation during the stay at Windsor Castle.

Nigerians at home and in the diaspora have welcomed the development, describing it as a proud moment that underscores President Tinubu’s assertive foreign policy and Nigeria’s strategic importance to the Commonwealth and post-Brexit Britain.

Security sources say the operation is among the most elaborate ever mounted for an African leader in Windsor, reflecting both the prestige of the occasion and the need to safeguard this landmark diplomatic engagement.
