U.S Won’t Allow India Develop & Challenge It Like China – U.S Official

Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau has delivered a no-holds-barred message to India during the ongoing Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi: America will not repeat the “mistakes” it made with China two decades ago by letting India build markets that could one day challenge United States commercial supremacy.

Speaking on March 5, 2026, at India’s flagship geopolitical forum, Landau left no room for ambiguity. “India should understand that we are not going to make the same mistakes with India that we made with China 20 years ago in terms of saying, we are going to let you develop all these markets, and then, the next thing we know, you are beating us in a lot of commercial things,” he declared.

He stressed that any trade engagement with India under the Trump administration’s “America First” policy must remain “fair to our people,” adding that Washington is accountable to American workers just as New Delhi is accountable to its own citizens.

India will not be allowed to develop to the point where it can compete with the U.S., Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said in New Delhi. https://t.co/TfbnmoaXYZ pic.twitter.com/3Y7zCCwV6g

The remarks come barely a month after the United States and India finalised an interim trade framework in early February 2026. As previously reported by NaijaChoice News, that agreement saw Washington slash reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods from 25 percent to 18 percent and remove punitive measures tied to India’s purchase of Russian oil — moves widely celebrated in both capitals as a major boost to bilateral commerce.

Yet Landau’s speech has now cast a long shadow over the optimism. While praising India’s “almost unlimited potential” as the world’s most populous nation and a country destined to shape the 21st century, the Deputy Secretary made it crystal clear that partnership does not mean a free ride to rival status.

The statement has triggered sharp reactions across India. Many analysts and commentators described it as “insensitive” and a rare public admission that the United States views even friendly rising powers through the lens of potential threat. External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar, addressing the same Raisina Dialogue, indirectly pushed back, reminding the world that India’s rise is driven by its own strengths and that no external power will dictate its trajectory.

For Nigeria and the broader African continent, Landau’s position carries important lessons. India remains one of Nigeria’s most strategic partners, with bilateral trade booming through pharmaceuticals, automobiles, technology transfer, and massive investments by Indian firms in manufacturing and power. The just-concluded India Trade Expo 2026 in Lagos underscored this deepening relationship, with hundreds of Indian companies scouting fresh opportunities across West Africa.

Analysts say the US stance could actually accelerate India’s “Look Africa” and “Act Africa” policies. With Washington openly signalling it will cap India’s commercial ascent, New Delhi may double down on partnerships with emerging markets like Nigeria, where it faces no such ceiling.

Landau, a former US Ambassador to Mexico and a key Trump loyalist, was not speaking off-script. His message aligns squarely with President Donald Trump’s second-term doctrine: no more “charity” in trade, no more nurturing future rivals.

Whether this blunt realism strengthens or strains the US-India strategic partnership will unfold in the coming months. What is already clear, however, is that the rules of global economic ascent have changed — and rising powers like India, and by extension Africa’s own giants, are being told they will have to fight harder for every inch of space at the top table.
