In a surprising turn of events amid the escalating Iran war, US President Donald Trump has expressed openness to receiving assistance from any country, including Ukraine, to counter Iranian drone attacks. This comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that the United States and other allies have sought Kyiv’s expertise in defending against Iranian-designed Shahed drones ravaging the Middle East.
Trump, speaking to Reuters in a telephone interview on Thursday, stated, “I’ll take any assistance from any country,” in response to queries about potential Ukrainian drone support. The statement underscores the urgency of the situation, as the US and its partners grapple with swarms of low-cost Iranian drones that have proven deadly and difficult to intercept using expensive Western systems.
As previously reported by NaijaChoice News, the Iran conflict erupted on February 28, 2026, when the US and Israel launched joint strikes aimed at dismantling Iran’s nuclear and missile programs, leading to the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and sparking regional retaliation. The war has since widened, with Iran firing missiles and drones at US bases in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAE, among others. Tragically, an Iranian drone struck a US facility in Kuwait early in the conflict, killing several American service members.

Zelensky, in a post on X late Wednesday, confirmed the US request: “We received a request from the United States for specific support in protection against (Iranian-designed) ‘shaheds’ in the Middle East region. I gave instructions to provide the necessary means and ensure the presence of Ukrainian specialists who can guarantee the required security.” He emphasized that such aid would only proceed if it does not compromise Ukraine’s defenses against Russia’s ongoing invasion, now in its fourth year.
Ukraine’s battle-hardened experience against Russian forces, who have deployed tens of thousands of Iranian-supplied Shahed drones since the 2022 invasion, has positioned Kyiv as a global leader in affordable anti-drone technology. Ukrainian manufacturers have developed low-cost interceptor drones, costing as little as $1,000 to $5,000 each, compared to millions for US-made Patriot missiles. These interceptors, designed to hunt and destroy Shaheds mid-air, offer a game-changing alternative amid depleting Western missile stocks.
The UAE alone reported intercepting over 1,000 Iranian drones and nearly 200 missiles since the war began, highlighting the scale of the threat. Zelensky has also engaged leaders from the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait on potential cooperation, proposing exchanges like interceptor drones for Patriot missiles to bolster Ukraine’s skies.
This development presents Zelensky with a strategic opportunity to curry favor with Trump, who is pushing for a peace deal in the Russia-Ukraine war while prioritizing cost-effective solutions in the Middle East. However, concerns loom that diverting US resources to Iran could strain supplies for Ukraine, making Kyiv’s cheaper alternatives even more vital.
Newsweek has reached out to the US Department of Defense for further comment. Meanwhile, recent discussions on X suggest Russia may be supplying intelligence to Iran, potentially escalating the proxy dynamics, though US forces remain undeterred.
