A 30-year-old nurse from Wisconsin, United States, Melissa Knutson, has been handed an 18-month prison sentence for engaging in a sexual relationship with a patient under her care and later fabricating a sexual assault allegation against him to cover her tracks.
The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office disclosed that Knutson, who worked with the county’s Drug Court program, pleaded guilty to charges of misconduct in public office and obstructing an officer on February 27, 2026. In addition to the prison term, she will undergo two years of extended supervision upon release.
According to court documents, the incident dates back to 2022 when Knutson was responsible for administering Vivitrol, a medication for substance abuse treatment, to participants in the drug court—a supervised program for individuals battling addiction instead of incarceration. Prosecutors revealed that Knutson repeatedly had sexual intercourse with one male patient during this period.

The case unraveled when reports of the inappropriate relationship reached the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services, prompting an investigation. In a desperate bid to evade accountability, Knutson claimed the patient had sexually assaulted her, alleging she remained silent out of fear for her safety and that of her family.
However, investigators uncovered text messages between Knutson and the patient that exposed the truth. The messages showed she initiated the affair and even promised to deny everything if discovered. One exchange reportedly had her stating she would “deny it if caught.” Knutson later confessed during her plea hearing that the assault accusation was entirely false, fabricated solely to avoid consequences for her actions.
As previously reported by NaijaChoice News, similar cases of professional misconduct in healthcare settings have raised concerns globally, highlighting the need for stricter ethical guidelines to protect vulnerable patients.
During sentencing, Judge Paul Curran described Knutson’s behavior as “despicable” and an “embarrassment to nurses everywhere,” noting her remorse appeared superficial. Other charges, including second-degree sexual assault, were dismissed as part of the plea deal.
Knutson’s conviction underscores the severe repercussions of abusing positions of trust, especially in programs designed to aid recovery from addiction. Authorities emphasized that drug court participants are under strict supervision, making such breaches particularly egregious.
This international story serves as a cautionary tale for healthcare professionals worldwide, reminding them of the boundaries that must be upheld to maintain public confidence in the system.
