Kaduna – In a landmark move that signals a new era for sports infrastructure in Northern Nigeria, the Kaduna State Government has officially taken ownership of the iconic Ahmadu Bello Stadium following approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

Governor Senator Uba Sani, CON, made the announcement on Thursday, describing the transfer as “a decision of enduring institutional consequence.” The handover, executed through the National Sports Commission (NSC) under the leadership of Alhaji Shehu Dikko, comes with agreed safeguards to protect national interests.

The governor, who signed the Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of Kaduna State while Alhaji Shehu Dikko signed for the Federal Government, stressed that the move aligns perfectly with President Tinubu’s transformation agenda to reposition sports as a viable driver of economic growth and social renewal.

NaijaChoice News gathered that the stadium, commissioned in 1964 and designed by renowned English architects Jane Drew and Maxwell Fry, had remained largely unchanged for over six decades. It served as home ground to Kaduna United FC and hosted several national team matches in its heyday, but lacked the modern upgrades needed to remain a premier venue.

Under the new arrangement, comprehensive reconstruction is already underway to double the seating capacity from 16,000 to 32,000, making it the second-largest stadium in Nigeria after the 60,491-capacity Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. The upgrade is expected to meet FIFA standards and position the facility among the finest in the country.

“Our purpose is precise: to stimulate economic activity, strengthen sports tourism, generate employment, and attract investment,” Governor Sani stated in his message. “Beyond commerce, however, the Stadium will remain a shared national asset, open to our national teams, federal sporting programmes, and events of collective importance. Its gates will continue to welcome all Nigerians.”

The National Sports Commission has commended Kaduna State for its prompt alignment with the Federal Government’s sports development vision, noting that the state has set a clear example for others to follow.

The governor extended profound appreciation to President Tinubu, the Federal Government, the leadership of the National Sports Commission led by Alhaji Shehu Dikko, and all stakeholders for their diligence in making the transition possible.

With reconstruction in full swing, residents and sports enthusiasts in Kaduna are already anticipating the return of major national and international events to the revamped arena. The project is seen as a testament to effective federal-state partnership and responsible public stewardship that will benefit generations of Nigerians.

This development comes as Kaduna State continues to invest heavily in youth and sports development, further cementing its reputation as a pacesetter in the new Nigeria.
