President Bola Tinubu has given the nod for the immediate reconstruction of three vital federal roads in Niger State, alongside an extension of the Bodo-Bonny Road in Rivers State, aiming to bolster national infrastructure and economic growth.

The approval came during a strategic meeting with the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, as disclosed in official statements.

According to details from the Ministry of Works, the Niger State projects span a combined 306.5 kilometers and will utilize reinforced concrete pavement for enhanced durability and longevity. The roads include the Mokwa-Bida Road (120km), Mokwa-Makeri Road (63km), and Bida-Labata Road (123.5km).

These corridors are pivotal to Nigeria’s economic framework, facilitating reduced transport costs, improved connectivity between key regions, and boosted trade activities in the North-Central zone. Niger State, known for its agricultural prowess and mineral resources, stands to gain significantly from these upgrades, which could ease the movement of goods and people, thereby stimulating local economies and development.

Shifting focus to the South-South, the extension of the Bodo-Bonny Road will link it to the East-West Road on a dual carriageway basis, complete with concrete paving and solar-powered streetlights. This builds on the ongoing 37.9km Bodo-Bonny project, handled by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and valued at N280 billion, which has already achieved about 90.98% completion as of late 2025. The road, traversing challenging swamps and creeks, marks the first direct land connection to Bonny Island – home to Nigeria’s Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) plant and other energy hubs.

Experts highlight its role in advancing the Niger Delta’s progress, catalyzing industrial success, and addressing poverty through better economic opportunities. The project’s innovative use of concrete ensures resilience against the region’s tough terrain, setting a standard for sustainable infrastructure.

NaijaChoice News reports that these initiatives align with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing infrastructure as a driver for national unity and prosperity. Stakeholders in both states have welcomed the move, anticipating job creation and improved safety for commuters.
