Abua-Ndele Bridge Nears Completion After 13 Years of Neglect in Rivers State

Rivers State Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara has breathed new life into a long-forgotten infrastructure project, transforming years of abandonment into a beacon of progress for communities in the region.

The Abua-Agba Ndele Bridge and Ahoada-Ndele Road, initiated back in 2013 under former Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, had languished incomplete for over a decade, leaving vital connections severed and economic growth stifled. This critical link, comprising a 1.2km approach road and a 240m-long, 9.6m-wide bridge, serves as a lifeline connecting Abua/Odual, Ahoada-East, and Emohua Local Government Areas (LGAs). It promises faster access to the East-West Road and Port Harcourt, enhancing agriculture, trade, and the seamless movement of goods and services.

Just two months into his tenure, on July 28, 2023, Governor Fubara made a historic visit to the site, confronting the stark reality of neglect. Without delay, he re-engaged the original contractor, Setraco Nigeria Limited, igniting a swift turnaround. What was once a symbol of stalled development is now on the cusp of reality, with finishing touches underway and commissioning expected imminently.

Recent inspections and updates as of early February 2026 confirm the bridge’s near-completion status, hailed as a testament to focused leadership. Social media buzz from residents and observers underscores the excitement, with posts highlighting the project’s revival under Fubara’s administration. “This is governance in motion,” noted one local commentator, echoing sentiments of continuity and collective progress for Rivers State.

The revival aligns with broader infrastructural pushes in the state, including criticisms of delays on related roads like the Ndele/Omofo/Egamini/Agba-Ndele stretch, while praising the bridge’s rapid advancement. Officials anticipate the bridge becoming operational by early 2026, drastically reducing travel times and boosting local economies.

Governor Fubara’s commitment extends beyond this project, with plans to address more roads in the 2026 budget, including the Ahoada-Abua corridor, ensuring tactical development across all LGAs.

As Rivers State marches forward, this development stands as a powerful reminder that purposeful leadership can bridge gaps—literally and figuratively—for the greater good.
