The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a Nigerian TikToker identified as Mirabel, popularly known on the platform as @mirab351, following widespread outrage and reactions across social media.

The incident gained national attention after a viral video and emotional posts shared online by the victim triggered heated conversations and renewed concerns over safety and justice for survivors of sexual violence in Nigeria.

Police authorities confirmed that immediate steps were taken after the case came to their attention.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed in a message to Vanguard that the Commissioner of Police directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Ibafo Division to urgently establish contact with the victim upon receiving information about the alleged assault.

According to Babaseyi, the victim subsequently reported at the Ibafo Police Station, where officers obtained preliminary details surrounding the incident. Initial findings, however, indicated that the alleged assault occurred within the Ogijo jurisdiction.

“Following preliminary treatment, she was subsequently conveyed to the Ogijo Police Station, being the jurisdiction where the incident occurred, for proper documentation and continuation of investigative procedures,” the police spokesperson was quoted as saying by Vanguard.

The Command further disclosed that due to the victim’s fragile medical and emotional condition, she has been referred for extensive medical care to support her recovery while investigations continue.

Police authorities reiterated their commitment to ensuring the victim’s safety and wellbeing, assuring the public that diligent efforts are underway to identify and prosecute those responsible.

Earlier, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) issued an update confirming it had successfully contacted a close friend of the survivor, who verified that she had been discharged from the hospital.

The agency said it was able to respond swiftly due to information provided by members of the public who tagged and alerted officials online.

However, the DSVA clarified that the incident occurred in Ogun State and therefore fell outside its jurisdiction. It added that all relevant information gathered had been forwarded to appropriate authorities in Ogun State for further action.

The agency emphasised ongoing collaboration between institutions while prioritising the survivor’s protection and confidentiality.

The alleged assault reportedly occurred on February 15, according to the viral video shared by the survivor, in which she claimed an unidentified man forced his way into her apartment, restrained her and issued threats suggesting that his family’s influence could obstruct justice.

The case has since sparked nationwide calls for accountability, with Nigerians demanding a transparent investigation and warning against intimidation or abuse of influence that could derail prosecution.

Authorities in Ogun State have urged the survivor to cooperate fully with investigators to ensure due process, while reaffirming that sexual violence remains a serious criminal offence punishable under Nigerian law.
