In a moving ceremony that brought together political heavyweights, traditional rulers, and the faithful, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Friday paid a stirring tribute to the late Chief (Mrs) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo, describing her as a woman whose life was a shining example of quiet service, deep faith, strong moral values, and total commitment to family and community.

The Funeral Mass for the 100-year-old matriarch, widow of Ogun State’s first civilian governor, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, was held at the historic St. Sebastian Catholic Cathedral, Odo-Egbo, Ijebu-Ode.

As earlier reported by NaijaChoice News, the revered Iya-Ijo passed on peacefully on January 12, 2026, at the ripe age of 100, leaving behind an indelible mark on the state and the church she served with distinction.

Speaking during the solemn service, Governor Abiodun, who was joined by former governors Chief Olusegun Osoba, Senator Gbenga Daniel, and Senator Ibikunle Amosun, among other dignitaries, reflected on the exemplary life of Mama Onabanjo.

“We paid tribute to the late Mama Lucia Onabanjo, celebrating a life defined by quiet service, deep faith, strong moral values, and unwavering support for family and community,” the governor said.

“At her Funeral Mass held at St. Sebastian Catholic Cathedral, we reflected on her humility, discipline, and the enduring influence she exercised not through public office, but through character, conviction, and moral guidance.”

The governor noted that Mama Onabanjo was not just the wife of a former governor; she was a pillar of strength who stood firmly by her husband, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, even in the most trying moments of his political career, including his detention following the 1983 military coup.

“In honour of her legacy as the Iya-Ijo of the church and a steadfast pillar behind public leadership in Ogun State, we pledged our government’s support for the completion of the cathedral project. This, we affirmed, will stand as a lasting tribute to her life of service, faith, and commitment to the church,” Abiodun declared to thunderous applause from the congregation.

He added that Mama Onabanjo exemplified the vital role women play in shaping society through resilience, ethical standards, and quiet leadership.

“She was a devoted wife and mother who stood firmly beside her husband, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, even in the most challenging moments. Her life remains an inspiration, and her values will continue to guide generations to come,” the governor stressed.

In his homily, Reverend Father Mary Odunsi described the late Mama as a “silent achiever” whose quiet contributions to her husband’s administration, the church, and the larger society would continue to inspire future generations.

The cathedral, which Mama Onabanjo served as Iya-Ijo until her passing, is now set to receive full state government backing for its completion – a fitting memorial to a woman who gave her all in the service of God and humanity.

As the remains of the late matriarch were laid to rest, many in Ogun State and beyond agreed that a great tree has fallen, but her fruits – in the form of strong family values, faith, and selfless service – will continue to nourish the land for years to come.

May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.
