The Federal Government is taking bold steps to transform Nigeria’s technical education landscape by partnering with Singapore to introduce a two-year diploma programme in Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications across polytechnics, technical colleges and other TVET institutions nationwide.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, announced the initiative after hosting Singapore’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Lim Sim Seng, in Abuja. The collaboration will tap into the expertise of Singapore’s Institute of Technical Education Education Services (ITEES) to develop and roll out the AI-focused diploma.
“We will collaborate on the development and implementation of a two-year technical diploma in AI applications across institutions in the country,” Dr. Alausa stated.

This move marks a major leap from traditional vocational training into high-tech digital skills. The programme will equip students with practical knowledge in areas such as machine learning, automation, data systems and AI-driven industrial applications — skills critical for Nigeria’s emerging digital economy.
Global Excellence Model and Capacity Building
Beyond the AI diploma, the partnership will introduce the Global Excellence Model for Skills Training (GEMSET), a structured framework to assess and uplift TVET institutions across seven dimensions of excellence.
It also includes leadership training for 40 heads of technical institutions and a comprehensive Train-the-Trainer programme focused on modern assessment methods and pedagogy. These initiatives aim to strengthen governance, improve teaching quality and set measurable performance standards for TVET centres nationwide.
The latest agreement builds on the Minister’s working visit to Singapore in late 2025, where Nigerian officials toured ITE campuses and engaged the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to expand bilateral cooperation.
Surging Interest in TVET Reforms
The timing of this partnership is strategic. The Federal Government’s sweeping TVET reforms have already recorded massive public interest. In 2025, the nationwide TVET programme attracted over 90,000 applications within its first week of launch, while participation in entrance examinations jumped by nearly 300 percent compared to the previous year. Some reports even put total verified applications at over 1.3 million.
Key reforms include shifting curricula to 80 percent practical training and 20 percent theory, payment of stipends to technical college trainees, massive infrastructure upgrades, and the introduction of biometric attendance systems to promote transparency and eliminate ghost students.
Dr. Alausa has repeatedly emphasised that these changes are designed to produce job creators rather than job seekers, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Learning from Singapore’s Success Story
Singapore is globally celebrated for its skills-driven economy, where strong industry linkages and world-class vocational institutions have powered rapid development. Nigerian officials believe adapting elements of the Singapore model — particularly ITE’s industry-relevant training and excellence framework — will help close Nigeria’s skills gap and position the country as a competitive player in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Stakeholders in the education sector have welcomed the development. Many see the AI diploma and broader partnership as a game-changer that could boost youth employment, attract foreign investment in tech and manufacturing, and reduce reliance on white-collar degrees alone.
As implementation begins, the Federal Ministry of Education and NBTE are expected to select pilot institutions and finalise curriculum details in the coming months.
This Nigeria-Singapore collaboration signals a clear message: the country is serious about equipping its young population with future-ready skills to drive sustainable economic growth.
