In a heartbreaking incident that has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian community both at home and abroad, a 20-year-old United Kingdom-based Nigerian student, Khaleed Oladipo, has tragically lost his life after being fatally stabbed in Leicester, United Kingdom.
Oladipo, a second-year cybersecurity student at De Montfort University (DMU), was attacked on Tuesday evening in Oxford Street, close to the university campus. According to Leicestershire Police, emergency services were called to the scene just after 5:00 PM GMT following reports of a man collapsing after a confrontation. Despite the rapid response, including four ambulances and an air ambulance, Oladipo was rushed to Leicester Royal Infirmary where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
A post-mortem examination confirmed that the young student died from a single stab wound to the chest. Police have arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of murder, who remains in custody as investigations continue. Several roads in the area, including Infirmary Road, Oxford Street, Infirmary Square, Carlton Street, York Road, Lower Brown Street, The Gateway, and Gosling Street, were cordoned off following the incident to allow for forensic examinations.

Oladipo, originally from London but of Nigerian descent, was described by his devastated family as an “extremely loved son, brother, uncle, boyfriend, and friend.” In an emotional tribute released through the police, they expressed gratitude to members of the public who stopped to assist, as well as the ambulance service and hospital staff who fought tirelessly to save him.
“Khaleed was a good boy who loved his family. He was in his second year at university, and we were so proud of him,” the family statement read. “One of his main passions was football, and he had played since the age of four. He was an Arsenal supporter, and we believe he was on his way home to watch the game later that night when he was stabbed and killed.”
The university community has also been deeply affected by the loss. DMU Vice-Chancellor Katie Normington issued a statement mourning Oladipo, saying: “A family has lost a beloved member, and all our hearts go out to them. This tragedy is deeply felt across our campus and the city. Khaleed was a member of our DMU community, and we know this loss will be particularly difficult for those who knew him. We are directly supporting the students who studied with Khaleed, as well as all our students and staff who are feeling this loss.”

Leicestershire Police have appealed for witnesses, particularly those with dashcam or CCTV footage from the area around 5:00 PM on Tuesday. Detective Inspector Kenny Henry, leading the investigation, said: “Our thoughts remain with Khaleed’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. We are continuing to carry out extensive inquiries to establish the full circumstances of what happened.”
The Nigerian diaspora in the UK has reacted with outrage and sorrow, with many taking to social media to demand justice for Oladipo. Community leaders are calling for increased safety measures around university campuses to prevent such senseless violence.
