In a nail-biting encounter that kept football fans on the edge of their seats, Arsenal Women emerged victorious in the first-ever FIFA Women’s Champions Cup, defeating Brazilian side Corinthians 3-2 after extra time at the Emirates Stadium in London. The Gunners, representing UEFA as the reigning Champions League winners, showcased resilience and skill to lift the prestigious trophy and pocket a whopping $2.3 million in prize money.

The match, played on February 1, 2026, saw Arsenal take the lead twice during regular time through goals from Olivia Smith and Lotte Wubben-Moy, only for Corinthians to equalize on both occasions, forcing the game into extra time. The turning point came in the 104th minute when substitute Caitlin Foord unleashed a powerful strike past the Corinthians goalkeeper, sealing the win for Renee Slegers’ side and etching their names in football history.

This victory marks Arsenal’s second major international trophy in under a year, following their UEFA Women’s Champions League triumph in May 2025. As earlier reported by NaijaChoice News here, the tournament featured six continental champions, including Africa’s representatives AS FAR from Morocco, who finished fourth after a 4-0 loss to Gotham FC in the third-place playoff.

Football enthusiasts across Nigeria and Africa celebrated the achievement, with many highlighting the growing prominence of women’s football on the global stage. Although no Nigerian club participated this time, the success of Arsenal – a team followed by many Nigerian fans due to the Premier League’s popularity – has sparked discussions on boosting women’s football development in the continent.

In a post-match reaction, Arsenal boss Renee Slegers praised her team’s determination, saying the win was a testament to their hard work throughout the season. Corinthians, the Copa Libertadores champions, put up a valiant fight but ultimately fell short in what was a showcase of top-tier women’s club football.

The FIFA Women’s Champions Cup aims to crown the world’s best women’s club side annually, and Arsenal’s triumph has set a high bar for future editions. Nigerian football lovers are already looking forward to seeing African teams, perhaps even from the NWFL, make a stronger impact in coming years.
