EU and India Seal Historic Free Trade Deal Amid Global Trade Uncertainties

The European Union and India have finally inked a groundbreaking free trade agreement on Tuesday, marking the largest such pact ever for both parties, as they navigate choppy waters in trade relations with the United States under President Donald Trump.

“We did it, we delivered the mother of all deals,” Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, announced to journalists in New Delhi.

This landmark deal is set to deepen economic and political bonds between the 27-member EU bloc and India, the world’s fourth-largest economy, according to a statement from the Commission. It comes at a pivotal moment of heightened geopolitical tensions and economic headwinds, underscoring their shared dedication to open economies and rules-based trade.

“We have sent a powerful message to the world that cooperation grounded in rules can still yield massive results,” von der Leyen added in the statement.

The timing couldn’t be more telling. Just weeks ago, US President Donald Trump rattled European allies with threats of steeper tariffs if they opposed his controversial bid to annex Greenland from Denmark, though he eventually walked back the rhetoric. For the EU, the US remains its top export destination overall. In August last year, Trump slapped an extra 25% tariff on Indian imports as retaliation for New Delhi’s continued purchases of Russian oil and gas, piling onto an earlier 25% levy.

Bilateral trade between the EU and India already clocks in at over €120 billion ($144 billion) in goods and services annually, with goods trade nearly doubling over the past decade. Negotiations, which kicked off in 2007, hit pause for years before restarting in 2022. Last week, von der Leyen spotlighted the pact as part of Europe’s drive for “a new form of independence” amid global shocks, preferring “fair trade over tariffs” in her Davos address.

This EU-India accord follows hot on the heels of the EU’s recent trade tie-up with South America’s Mercosur bloc. For India, 2025 was a banner year for FTAs, inking deals with several nations amid Trump’s unpredictable return to the White House and his “America First” trade antics.

The European Commission projects the deal will double EU goods exports to India by 2032 through tariff eliminations or cuts on 96.6% of shipments. Key highlights include Indian tariffs on European cars dropping gradually from 110% to 10%, and duties on machinery, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals largely vanishing. EU wines will see tariffs halved from 150% to 75% initially, eventually sliding to 20%, while olive oil tariffs fall from 45% to zero over five years.

On the flip side, the EU will slash tariffs on Indian exports, boosting labor-heavy sectors like textiles, tea, spices, gems, and jewelry, as per India’s commerce ministry.

Daniel Kral, a senior economist at Oxford Economics, described the pact as having “huge symbolic weight in an era of rising protectionism,” though it may not dramatically juice growth for either economy right away.

From a Naija perspective, this mega-deal could ripple across Africa, including Nigeria. As India diversifies its energy imports away from Russia to dodge US sanctions, it’s eyeing more crude from Naija, Angola, and other African producers – a potential boon for our oil sector, which already ships billions worth to India. EU imports from Nigeria hit $21.87 billion in 2024, mostly oil and gas, but this FTA might inspire Abuja to push for deeper ties with both blocs, especially as ECOWAS eyes its own trade pacts. Experts warn, however, that such global realignments could pressure African economies if not matched with local reforms, potentially affecting migration and trade balances.

The agreement still faces legal hurdles and ratification before it kicks in, but it’s already being hailed as a strategic win against trade isolationism. For Nigeria, watching from the sidelines, it’s a reminder to hustle for our slice of the global pie in these uncertain times.
