The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is under intense scrutiny following the announcement of the 2027 general election dates, which have sparked concerns over potential clashes with major religious observances in Nigeria’s multi-faith society.

In a respectful open letter posted on his X handle (@BashirAhmaad), former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad, OON, drew attention to the overlap between the proposed polls and the holy month of Ramadan, a period of intense fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection for millions of Nigerian Muslims.

The letter, addressed directly to INEC, reads in part:

“Dear @INECNigeria, This is a respectful observation following the announcement of February 20th and March 6th, 2027, as the date for the next Presidential and National Assembly and Governorship and State Assembly elections respectively. The proposed dates fall within the holy month of Ramadan, a period during which many Muslims devote significant time to fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection.

If the intention is to encourage full and inclusive participation in the electoral process, scheduling such a critical national exercise during Ramadan may present challenges for a large segment of the population. Many Muslims tend to reduce engagement in demanding worldly activities during this period in order to focus on religious obligations.

Given the significant Muslim population in this country, it may be worthwhile to reconsider the timing to ensure broader participation and convenience for all citizens.

I do hope this observation will be taken in the spirit of inclusiveness and national cohesion.“

INEC had, just hours earlier on Friday, February 13, 2026, released the timetable for the 2027 polls. According to the commission, Presidential and National Assembly elections are slated for Saturday, February 20, 2027, while Governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls will hold on Saturday, March 6, 2027.

Double Religious Overlap: Ramadan and Lent in Focus

The timing has raised eyebrows not just among Muslims but also Christians, as the dates fall squarely within the Lenten season.

Ramadan 2027 is expected to commence from the evening of Sunday, February 7, 2027, and end on Monday, March 8, 2027. This means both election days – February 20 and March 6 – will occur during the sacred fasting period, when observant Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to dusk, often leading to reduced physical energy and altered daily routines.

Lent 2027, the Christian period of fasting, prayer, and penance in preparation for Easter, begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2027, and runs until Thursday, March 25, 2027. With Nigeria’s Christian population also significant, the scheduling has prompted quiet murmurs about equitable consideration for all faiths.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, is roughly divided between Muslims (estimated at 50-56% of the population, or over 100 million people) and Christians, making religious sensitivity a cornerstone of national cohesion. Experts warn that holding high-stakes elections during these periods could dampen voter turnout, particularly in the Muslim-dominated northern states, where participation is already a key factor in determining national leadership.

Bashir Ahmad’s Balanced Stance

In a follow-up post on X, Bashir Ahmad, a vocal supporter of President Bola Tinubu, clarified his position, blending advocacy with political pragmatism:

“If INEC reconsiders the 2027 election dates it has just announced, which fall within our holy month of Ramadan, it would be a welcome decision in the interest of broader participation. However, if the dates eventually remain unchanged, we will still have the strength and energy to go out and re-elect President Bola Tinubu on February 20th, 2027.”

His comments have resonated widely, with many Nigerians praising the “respectful observation” as a call for unity rather than division. Some social media users, however, argued that elections on weekends already accommodate working-class voters, and fasting Muslims have historically participated in civic duties.

Broader Reactions and Precedents

The development comes amid other voices raising similar alarms. The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria recently called for the removal of INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, citing broader concerns over electoral integrity, though not directly linking it to the dates. Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) had earlier urged a shift in FCT Area Council polls due to Ramadan overlaps in a related local election.

Historically, Nigeria has adjusted electoral timelines to avoid major religious clashes. In past cycles, INEC has shown flexibility, but the 2027 timetable was released early to allow parties and voters ample preparation time, as stated by the commission.

As the dust settles on this fresh controversy, all eyes remain on INEC. Will the commission heed the call for review in the spirit of “inclusiveness and national cohesion,” as Bashir Ahmad put it? Or will the dates stand, testing the resilience of Nigeria’s democracy during its most sacred seasons?

This report combines official announcements, Bashir Ahmad’s public statement, and verified religious calendars for 2027.
