- Adamu Abubakar, eldest son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, officially defects to ADC
As previously reported by NaijaChoice News, Adamu resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday after serving a letter dated March 4 to the PDP chairman of Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State. The resignation took immediate effect.
Just hours after announcing his exit from the PDP, the former commissioner completed his online registration with the ADC — the same platform where his father, Atiku Abubakar, is positioning to contest the 2027 presidential election.

In a post on X on Thursday night, Adamu confirmed the move and rallied his followers to join him. He stated: “Yes, it is ADC! I am pleased to formally announce that I have registered with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). My decision to align with the ADC is driven by a firm commitment to strengthening our multi-party democracy and standing shoulder to shoulder with patriotic Nigerians who are determined to restore value, dignity, and prosperity to our great nation.
“This step reflects my belief that together, through collective resolve and principled leadership, we can build a better future for our people and for generations yet unborn. I therefore call on all my supporters and well-wishers to join me by registering with the ADC as we work together to advance the cause of good governance and national development. I remain deeply grateful for your unwavering support, solidarity, and prayers.”
The development comes weeks after Adamu resigned his cabinet position in Adamawa State following Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s defection from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) along with several commissioners. Unlike his younger brother Abba Abubakar, who crossed to the APC in January, Adamu has chosen to align with his father in the ADC.
Political observers see the move as a strategic family realignment ahead of the 2027 polls, with Atiku reportedly building structures within the ADC to challenge for the presidency once again.
Supporters of the former commissioner have already begun reacting to his call, with many expressing readiness to register with the ADC in solidarity.
